To Kick off the “First Friday” event for the month, the Tuscaloosa Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center will feature Alabama native Roger Jones’ exhibit entitled “Every Night.” The exhibit will take place from Oct. 1 to Oct. 30. Jones’ art will be displayed in the Arts Council Gallery within the center. On Friday, Oct. 2, a reception will take place to honor the artist from 5-8 p.m.

Local art galleries, businesses and restaurants that are located downtown will also open their doors for “First Friday” and show what they have to offer. According to The Art Council’s official site, some examples of downtown galleries that typically open for the event are Paul R. Jones Gallery of Art, Gallery on the Boulevard and Duet Art and Jewelry.

“There will be 22 paintings in this exhibition,” Roger Jones said, “This is my first time to do a show consisting of only paintings. In the past, the majority of my work has consisted of drawings. The paintings in ‘Every Night’ are oil paintings on birch panels and canvas. The paintings can be described as abstract, but to be a little more specific, elements of geometric abstraction are abstract expressionism are present in these paintings.”

Jones received his Bachelor in Arts in 2007 from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He received his Masters in Fine Arts in painting from The University of Alabama in 2012. Jones currently works in Birmingham at the Space-One Eleven, a non-profit organization which focuses on giving professional opportunities to local artists as well as artistically educating the area’s youth.
