For the second time in three days Alabama practiced indoors due to steady rain early in the day. Here are some observations from Wednesday afternoon’s practice:

Sophomore right guard Alex Leatherwood was back practicing with the first-team offensive line after missing Monday and Tuesday for undisclosed reasons.

The running backs high-stepped in between pads while holding footballs, then broke the opposite way that running back coach Joe Pannunzio leaned. Damien Harris, Brian Robinson and Najee Harris led off the drill.

Jerry Jeudy and DeVonta Smith were the first two wide receivers through a drill in which they practiced sharp, crisp cuts in between cones. The receivers later moved on to practice with the quarterbacks, where Smith and Henry Ruggs III were the first in line.

The defensive backs also split into two lines, matching up in pairs to practice their coverage technique. Then they did the same and practiced tackling technique. The first three pairs were Deionte Thompson-Trevon Diggs, Xavier McKinney-Saivion Smith, Shyheim Carter-Patrick Surtain II.

Alabama’s first-team Dime defense (six defensive backs): Diggs, Saivion Smith, Carter, Thompson, McKinney, Jared Mayden.

The second-team Dime defense: freshman corners Surtain II, Josh Jobe, Jalyn Armour-Davis and Kyriq McDonald (redshirt freshman), and safeties Carter and Keaton Anderson at one spot and Daniel Wright and Eddie Smith at the other.

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne watched practice from the sideline.
