New AD Battle watches football practice for first time

Alabama retreated indoors for its fourth practice of the spring on Friday. The Crimson Tide practiced in full pads for the second time, after strapping up for the first time on Wednesday.

Newly elected athletics director Bill Battle watched from the sideline as the two-time defending national champion football team went through individual drills. Battle assumed office on Friday after UA Board of Trustees confirmed his recommendation.

Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, father of freshman walk-on quarterback Luke Del Rio, also observed Friday’s indoor practice.

Defensive back John Fulton and wide receiver Kevin Norwood remained in the care of strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran. The two donned black no-contact jerseys and watched practice from stationary bikes.

Also wearing no-contact jerseys were linebacker C.J. Mosley, wide receiver DeAndrew White and running backs Jalston Fowler and Dee Hart. All four went through individual drills.

Wide outs Christion and Cyrus Jones worked with the defensive backs again, as did Hart. The usual offensive trio has worked on the defensive side of the ball since the start of spring practice. Cyrus Jones was wearing crimson like the rest of the defensive players. But Christion Jones was wearing white, for offense.

Linebacker Xzavier Dickson was grouped in with the defensive linemen again today. He has flipped between the linebackers and defensive line all spring.

The Tide will not practice next week because of spring break. Alabama will resume its spring practice schedule on Monday April 1.
