Top 5 sources for severe weather coverage

In a poll on The Crimson White’s Facebook page, several students sounded off on their preferred source of by-the-minute storm coverage. As the severe weather over Alabama continues into the night, the following sources can provide necessary information.

1. James Spann on Twitter (@spann)

ABC 33/40 Chief Meteorologist James Spann takes social media seriously during a storm, and mentions while on the air that storm coverage is now “a two-way business”–he sends out information, but also uses crowd-sourced information from his followers in his reports.

2. #alwx hashtag on Twitter

Several students suggested searching and following #alwx on Twitter, a hashtag that users attach to tweets about weather in Alabama. James Spann regularly uses the hashtag to mark tweets that are his official reports, rather than interactions with his followers.

3. Weather.com

Students also suggested weather.com, the official website of The Weather Channel. The site features real-time updates with a radar map.

4. City of Tuscaloosa on Twitter (@tuscaloosacity)

The City of Tuscaloosa’s official Twitter account regularly retweets weather reports about the area from a host of other sources, including AccuWeather, WVUA TV Weather, 94.1 ZBQ and even the UA SGA.

5. ABC 33/40

James Spann has a student following on television, as well. With his signature suspenders and MacBook on wheels, he gives a voice to the weather as it happens during the live sessions on the television network for the central Alabama market.
