The Tuscaloosa City Council City Council voted to set Sept. 16 as the date for the appeal hearing regarding the construction of Jinsei, a modern Japanese restaurant, in a historic district buffer zone. The property in question is located at 1715 University Boulevard and, if approved, will become Jinsei’s home early next year.

Jinsei offers a variety of sushi as well as other food and drink items. The restaurant’s potential move to one of Tuscaloosa’s historic districts has brought up mixed feelings from residents.

Mayor Walter Maddox also proclaimed Sept. 19, 2014, to be POW MIA  (prisoners of war and missing in action) Recognition Day in the city of Tuscaloosa. Maddox presented the proclamation to Commander Walter Turner, Navy veteran and commander of the Veterans of Foreign War post 6022 in Cottondale.

In the proclamation Maddox highlighted that ceremonies to remember prisoners of war are held across the United States and overseas, and deployed troops also participate in remembering prisoners of war.

“Taking the time to reflect upon those that sacrifice so much for our freedoms we enjoy today is essential to understanding why we get to live in this wonderful country,” Maddox said during Tuesday’s meeting.

Maddox invited and encouraged the public to celebrate this day in honor of America’s prisoners of war and those still missing in action.
