Why we can’t expect anything anymore in sports

But over the past few years, we can’t name one single team that has constantly remained on top. We’ve seen upset after upset, and it most likely won’t stop anytime soon.

We’re in the dawn of the upset age — a concept that has always been familiar but has become more frequent recently.

In the early to mid-2000s, the New England Patriots were the top dog of the NFL. For baseball, it was the Yankees. In basketball, it was the Miami Heat.

But recently there has been a shift in the paradigm of sports. We no longer expect the best from those teams. We’ve seen teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers come in and dominate one year and then sink back down.

We honestly can’t expect a dynasty to form in any sport anymore. There’s too much talent and player change-up that causes a team to rise and fall from season to season.

The Seattle Seahawks had one heck of a year last season, as did the Denver Broncos. But Seattle won the Super Bowl, yet has only had an average season so far. We expected them to be an unstoppable force this year, only to have our hopes dashed.

We have started to expect too much from our favorite teams.

I find it interesting that we analyze and expect so much out of a team when we are in a period where sports are constantly changing and evolving.

We can’t expect anything from our favorite teams. We just can’t, there’s no way to anticipate how they will do or if they will win back-to-back titles or go for a three-peat. As fans we can hope and brag about our teams, but there’s no way to expect them to do anything anymore, especially when there are a lot of really good teams out there.
