PRACTICE REPORT: Coker returns to drills on first day of class

The Alabama football team capped the first day of classes in the 2015-16 year with a practice outdoors. Quarterback Jake Coker returned to the field for practice, leading the line after missing the last two days of practice with a “minor foot injury.” Alec Morris and Cooper Bateman followed Coker. David Cornwell led another line of quarterbacks, followed by Blake Barnett and two walk-ons wearing numbers 19 and 10.

NOTES:

  • WR Cam Sims returned to practice in a non-contact black jersey and a brace on his left knee. He appeared to be limited, running some routes but sitting out other drills.
  • DL Anfernee Jennings also wore a black non-contact jersey in his first practice of the year. Jennings failed his physical after slipping a disc before his arrival on campus.
  • RB Kenyan Drake was second in line on the running back drills he did run, but was limited during Wednesday’s practice.
  • Alabama worked in its dime package again, defending wide receiver stack formations, a look that a handful of offenses, notably Ole Miss, used with some success against Alabama last season. The first team group is listed below:
    • Cornerbacks: Cyrus Jones and Marlon Humphrey
    • Safeties: Geno Smith and Eddie Jackson
    • Star: Minkah Fitzpatrick
    • Money: Maurice Smith
    • MACK linebacker: Reuben Foster.

Nick Saban will address the media tonight.
