Greek organizations to hold philanthropy events

Fraternities and sororities across campus will host a variety of philanthropy events this semester. They hope to raise thousands of dollars for their respective organizations.

Some of the major events coming up this semester are Alpha Chi Omega’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, which raises awareness for domestic violence, Delta Chi’s second annual Veterans Appreciation Dinner at Bryant Denny Stadium, and Sigma Phi Epsilon’s Casino Royale.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is on October 1, the first day of Domestic Violence Awareness month. Teams of men from different fraternities, friend groups and campus organizations will compete in a relay race while wearing women’s high heeled shoes.

“There is an old saying, ‘You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes,’” Abigail Taylor, philanthropy chair, said. “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes asks men to literally walk in women’s high-heeled shoes to raise awareness about the serious causes and effects of domestic violence.”

All are encouraged to come and participate or cheer on the men as they race. The proceeds from the event will go to Turning Point, a local women’s shelter.

Delta Chi’s Veterans Appreciation Dinner will be the following day, October 2. There will be a dinner with a guest speaker at Bryant Denny Stadium. All the proceeds will go towards benefiting veteran-focused organizations.

“Last year we had it at the Delta Chi House,” said Nate Huber, philanthropy chair. “It was a good event, and the speaker was great. All the veterans loved it. We got a lot of positive feedback, so we are trying to do it on a larger scale this year.”

Sigma Phi Epsilon will host their annual Casino Royale event on November 13. Casino Royale benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Alabama. Tickets have not been established yet, but they can be purchased from any of the fraternity brothers.
