WHAT: “Go Granny D”

WHO: Actress and Alabama native Barbara Bates Smith will portray Doris Haddock, “Granny D”, who was a social activist passionate about the need for campaign finance reform. At the age of 90 “Granny D” completed a 3,200-mile walk from Pasadena, California to Washington, D.C., to draw attention to campaign finance reform. After the walk, Haddock had her middle name legally changed to “Granny D”. At 93 she conducted a voter registration tour across the U.S., and at 94 she was the 2004 Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in New Hampshire. She passed away in 2010 at the age of 100. Smith will reenact highlights from Haddock’s 14-month walk. Jeff Sebens will accompany her.

WHEN: Friday, Feb. 5. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.

WHERE: Ferguson Center Theatre

WHY: “(Campaign finance reform) was a grassroots effort long before it was ever a hot conversation,” said Nick Rose, chairman of the Tuscaloosa County Democrats. “In my opinion (the show) provides context about where this conversation came from.”
