Every spring, the Coordinating Council for Honors Societies (CCHS) holds a ceremony for academic achievement and induction into honors societies that concludes Honors Week. The ceremony and its tradition of tapping students into their honors societies has been occurring for decades at UA.

This year’s Tapping on the Mound Ceremony will be on Honors Day, Friday, April 8, at 1:30 p.m. The ceremony is held on UA’s campus, at the Mound on the quad, according to a UA News Release. The rain location is Moody Music Building Concert Hall.

The event is a premiere awards ceremony for outstanding students and faculty and an induction ceremony into honors societies for seniors said Kirk Walter, advisor to the CCHS.

“[The event] recognizes and celebrates students, but also faculty, staff [and] administrators who have excelled academically or in service initiatives or in campus leadership,” Walter said. “It’s really a recognition of just some of the amazing work that has taken place on campus.”

The possible honors societies for students to be inducted into are Omicron Delta Kappa, Blue Key National Honor Society, Anderson Society and Delta Kappa, according to the same UA News Release.

The Tapping the Mound Ceremony is open for anyone to attend, Walter said.

“[The name] is kind of literal,” Walter said. “An existing or current, active member reads the name of the individual and this newly inducted person comes up onto the Mound and is actually physically tapped into membership. Some of them are going to use their emblem and some [will use] a tap on the shoulder.”
