Team USA takes home the final gold medal

America is bringing home gold and glory from the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

Team USA claimed the final gold medal of the Olympics on Sunday, keeping them in the No. 1 spot with 46 gold medals, 37 silver and 38 bronze. With a total of 121 medals, America is 54 medals ahead of Great Britain and 51 medals ahead of China, which are in the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively.

The final gold medal went to the US men’s basketball team after they defeated Serbia 96-66. This was the third straight Olympic gold medal for men’s basketball. After receiving his third gold medal following the game, Carmelo Anthony became the most decorated male in Olympic basketball history.

Women’s basketball won gold as well when it beat Spain 101-72 on Saturday, bringing basketball’s medal count to two.

Most sports brought in only one or two medals for Team USA, while the bulk of the nation’s medal count came from high-performing teams with many opportunities to win medals in events such as swimming, track and field and gymnastics, which won 33, 32 and 12, respectively.

Dominating in gymnastics and bringing home five medals, 19-year-old American gymnast Simone Biles was selected to be the flag bearer for the closing ceremonies Sunday evening.
