The University of Alabama Police Department announced today that after further investigation, the perpetrator of a theft near campus was not carrying a weapon at the time of the incident. 

On Saturday, the University sent out an email to students alerting them of a reported robbery near the school. At the time, it was believed that the individual who had committed the act was brandishing a deadly weapon.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at approxiamately 2 a.m. on the 1100 Block of University Boulevard. In the report, the victim noted that five to six African-American males approached him, one of which took a piece of property from the victim. Ultimately, the victim was able to escape unharmed.

The Clery Act of 1990 requires colleges an universities to inform their students when a crime involving a deadly weapon is reported. Educational institutions must alert students of these instances in a timely manner. The namesake of the act was a 19-year-old student from Lehigh University who was murdered in her residents’ hall in 1986.
