Trump tax demonstrations draw large crowds

Tens of thousands of activists joined
together on Tax Day over the weekend to demonstrate in cities across the country and demand the release of President Donald Trump’s tax returns.

Trump is the first president in four decades who has not released his returns or
comparable financial information. Critics feel the lack of transparency may indicate major tax avoidance or financial ties to the
Russian government.

In the beginning of the year, Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway said Trump would never release his returns, saying that the election proved that “people don’t care” about it.

“Trump says only the media cares about his taxes,” said Nelini Stamp, membership
director of the Working Families Party and a keynote speaker at the New York City
demonstration, in a statement after the march. “Today we’ve proved him wrong. It’s time for Trump to come clean so we know who he’s really working for.”

Over 100 cities including Birmingham held marches, with the largest taking place in Washington, D.C. and New York City. The marches were among the largest anti-Trump demonstrations since January’s
Women’s March.
