The Alabama Crimson Tide practiced outdoors today in front of a crowd of coaches from across the nation as well as the media. The defense worked on various drills in the heat and switched between drill styles at a fast pace. The focus for defense was more powerful and efficient movements while the offense focused on drills to improve speed.

  • Outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi worked hands on with 51, 33, 48, 16 in a drill designed to improve take off speeds. Players partnered up and one held the other back with a bungee cord while the runner would try to take off as quickly as possible.
  • Defensive line coach Karl Dunbar worked hands on with players such as defensive lineman Joshua Frazier today when he had players pair up and face off for a blocking drill.
  • Lupoi worked with players on drills involving better leverage when they block. Lupoi wanted to see hand to chest contact and for the for to be in a high to low motion for more power. If there were a go-pro on his helmet he would want to see footage of the other guy’s chest, Lupoi said.
  • Freshman quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was throwing short passes today in standard passing drills.
