Trump University suits settled for $25 million

A federal judge approved a $25 million settlement in the Trump University lawsuits on Friday.

The suits, filed by former Trump University students, alleged the real-estate school defrauded customers with false advertisements regarding the nature and quality of the classes.

U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel – who President Donald Trump said was biased due to his Mexican
heritage – called the ruling both “fair” and “adequate.” In a written opinion, Curiel said many Trump University customers would see an “extraordinary” recovery rate – getting back 80 or 90 percent of what they paid.

Not only will customers see this settlement money, but New York state will too. By deeming itself a “university” despite not offering a traditional education or degrees, Trump University violated the state’s education laws. As such, $1 million of the settlement will go to the state of New York.

“[The settlement will provide] relief – and hopefully much-needed closure – to the victims of Donald Trump’s fraudulent university,” New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement.
