Henagar Drive-In, a movie theater in DeKalb County, Alabama, made national headlines following their decision to not show Disney’s new “Beauty and the Beast” due to a gay scene in the movie.

The announcement came in a Facebook post last Thursday in which the owner stated, “If we can not take our 11-year-old granddaughter and 8-year-old grandson to see a movie we have no business watching it. If I can’t sit through a movie with God or Jesus sitting by me then we have no business showing it.”

The move has been nothing if not controversial. Many who feel that homosexuality does not align with their religious beliefs have praised the theater, while others have pointed toward the hypocrisy of the theater not showing “Beauty and the Beast,” but screening films that are thought to be less “family-friendly,” such as “50 Shades Darker.”

The owner stated that while she disapproves of the producers’ choice of having a gay character, she respects other theaters that are showing the movie and asks for that respect in return.
