Donna Aaron elected Northport mayor, incumbent Herndon out

Donna Aaron was elected mayor of Northport in the runoff election
on Tuesday.

By just 24 votes, Aaron, the former Northport City Council president, beat two-term incumbent mayor Bobby Herndon. Three-hundred and fourty-four votes were cast for the former, 320 for the latter.

In an interview with WSFA, Aaron said she believes Northport needs greater diversity in commercial
offerings, as commercial growth and business recruitment were a big part of her campaign.

“I want us to have new dollars here,” Aaron said. “I want us to spend our dollars here, not take them from an existing business. I think we need to be very aware of our own businesses we have here and make sure that we’re not in a competition with them.”

WSFA also reports Aaron said she would work to see that Northport’s recreational facilities were being fully utilized, suggesting hosting traveling youth sports events in Northport may be a good way to do so.

Working to promote development along Rose Blvd. and the Northport riverfront and widening Highway 60 are among Aaron’s other goals.

Two city councilmen were elected in runoff elections today as well. In Northport’s District 1, Dennis Hambright beat Judy Hayes with 62
percent of the vote. In District 5, Jeff Hogg beat Dale Phillips with 53 percent of the vote.
