Pair of Alabama coaches to be inducted in GCAA hall of fame

Alabama had two of its golf legends honored Wednesday by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Current men’s coach Jay Seawell and former men’s and women’s coach Dick Spybey were elected to the GCAA Hall of Fame.

Seawell led the Crimson Tide to back-to-back national championships in 2013 and 2014. He also has four Southeastern Conference Championships under his belt. Alabama has had 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and nine NCAA Championship berths during his tenure. Since 2002, Seawell has led Alabama to 46 team tournament championships. After the national championship in 2013, he was named the Dave Williams National Coach of the Year.

Seawell’s predecessor, Spybey, served as the Alabama’s women’s coach from 1985-88 and then the men’s coach from 1988-2002. He led the Crimson Tide to eight regional appearances and advanced to the NCAA finals four times. Spybey received the Dave Williams National Coach of the Year Award as well in 1992. He earned SEC Coach of the Year Awards as both a men’s and women’s coach, becoming the only coach to do so.

Both will be officially inducted at the GCAA Hall of Fame Reception and Awards Banquet Monday, Dec. 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
