Tuscaloosa church to host voting rights event

Alpha and Omega Ministries at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church will host a “Rally for Freedom” event this Saturday from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. in order to help individuals who had been convicted of a felony regain their civil and voting right.

“On receiving a felony conviction, you are separated from mainstream society. You have been labeled and stigmatized as the lowest human being,” Rev. L.C. Hall wrote in a
press release.

Hall and the other organizers at the rally seek to help people dealing with “felony disenfranchisement,” which occurs when otherwise eligible voters are kept from participating in
elections because of their
criminal history.

While some convicted felons cannot have their rights restored, Alabama law states that a person with a felony conviction not of “moral turpitude” can have his or her rights returned.

The event will also have a drive for any person seeking to register to vote.
