Alabama men’s basketball head coach Avery Johnson officially announced the addition of forward Tevin Mack to the Crimson Tide men’s basketball roster on Friday.
The transfer played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Texas. Due to NCAA transfer rules Mack will sit out during the 2017-2018 season.
“We are very excited to welcome Tevin to the Alabama men’s basketball family,” head coach Avery Johnson said. “Tevin is a versatile player offensively who can really score the basketball. He will have to sit out this season per NCAA rules, but he is the type of player that will impact our program the day he becomes eligible. In the meantime, he will be able to practice and that will give him an opportunity to learn our system.”
During his sophomore season, Mack led the Longhorns with 14.8 points and 31.3 minutes per game, while also adding 4.8 rebounds a contest. Over the 15 games he played, the 6-7, 220 pound forward connected on 45.9 percent (79-of-172) of his shots from the floor, including a team-high 39.1 percent (34-87) from behind the arc. The Texas-transfer reached double figures in 11 games and scored 18 points or more on eight different occasions.
In his first career start, Mack also accounted for 11 points – all coming in the second half – and seven rebounds against the Crimson Tide last December in Austin, Texas. Later in the season, he set career-highs in scoring (27 points) and field goals made (10), and tied his career best with four made three-pointers against Oklahoma State on Jan. 4.
As a freshman in 2015-16, Mack averaged a 5.1 points and 2.0 rebounds across 33 games. In 48 career games, he has 16 double-figure contests and has topped the 20-point mark three times.
At the time of his signing, Mack was ranked by ESPN No. 5 on its list of best available transfers in the nation.
He attended Dreher High School in Columbia, S.C. before suiting up for the Longhorns. Leaving high school, he was ranked 76th overall in the country and ranked the No. 11 small forward in the nation by 247Sports composite.
