According to a UA Alert email sent to students, Shelby Hall is being evacuated as the result of a chemical storage issue. Students are advised to avoid the area until further notice.

At approximately 5:32 p.m., students received a follow-up email from UA Alerts stating that the situation at Shelby Hall is “under control.” According to the email, McMillan and the other SEC buildings were evacuated as a precaution, and no injuries have been reported. Furthermore, the Tuscaloosa Fire Department is on the scene.

Around 6:43 p.m., another UA Alert email indicated that Shelby Hall, McMillan Hall and the other SEC buildings remain evacuated while first responders prepare to safely remove the potentially hazardous chemicals.

Students received yet another email from UA Alerts around 8:30 p.m. which said that authorities “will destroy the material in a controlled combustion in an empty lot on campus shortly. There is no need to be alarmed.” Again, students are cautioned to avoid the area.

UPDATE: At 9:33 p.m. the University issued an ALL CLEAR to students via email. The evacuated buildings have reopened.
