Alabama’s swimming and diving team finished strong on the second day of competition in the Southeastern Conference Championships.

The men finished the day by winning the 200 freestyle relay. Junior Robert Howard, sophomore Zane Waddell, senior Braxton Young and junior Laurent Bams held a narrow lead on second place Florida. The women’s 200 freestyle relay team, made up of freshman Flora Molnar and seniors Temarie Tomley, Lindsay Morrow and Bailey Scott, finished third, earning a spot on the podium.

Scott also made the podium in the 50 freestyle later in the day, finishing third. In the B final Alabama took home a 2-3-4 finish, with Molnar, Morrow and Tomley finishing in that order.

Howard also took third in the men’s 50 freestyle, while sophomore Zane Waddell finished fourth. Alabama was the only school with two top five finishers in the event.

Freshman Tyler Sesvold finished seventh in the B final and 15th overall. Young, competing in his first SEC Championship, finished third in the C final of the 50 freestyle. Christopher Staka finished seventh in the same race.

Leonie Kullmann picked up where she left off on day one, besting her own school record to win the B final in the 500 freestyle.

Senior Christopher Reid finished third in the B final of the 200 individual medley and ranked 11th overall. His run also earned him the second fastest finish in school history, just behind Anton McKee’s mark set in 2017. Junior Laurent Bams was eighth in the B final of the 200 individual medley, while sophomore Kyle Maas posted a career best, finishing 22nd overall.

Junior Robbie Costine and senior David Morton both scored off the 1-meter springboard, taking 18th and 24th, respectively.

Friday’s events include men’s and women’s 400 individual medley, the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle and well as the women’s 3-meter springboard diving event. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. CT and finals start at 6 p.m.
