The Student Government Association (SGA) Senate passed a resolution on Nov. 8 to show continued support of The University of Alabama’s It’s On Us week and SAFE week.

The resolution was written by Chad Heatley, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering, and had 14 additional sponsors.

According to the resolution, more than 11 percent of students experience rape or sexual assault while on college campuses.

Heatley said sexual assault and rape are a major problem on college campuses.

“The main point of the resolution is just to continue that The University of Alabama that you know they have a vested interest in protecting students on campus,” Heatley said. “We as a Student Government Association need to consider more continued support for all of those issues throughout the year.”

Heatley said the main point of the bill was to open the floor for conversations about sexual assault.

“This debate opens the door to a lot of the committees of students government to allow for change on campus in regards to supporting these weeks and promoting them more and more,” Heatley said.

The Senate also did not break for committees following third-year law Sen. Branden Greenberg’s motion to suspend.
