The Student Government Association (SGA) Senate passed an act outlining the creation of an “Involvement” page on its website at its meeting on Jan. 24.

Sen. Hunter Scott, a sophomore majoring in philosophy, authored the act, and he said many opportunities for student involvement in the SGA are available throughout the year.

Scott said the SGA is very broad with its multiple different roles and departments, so this legislation aims to have the SGA webmaster create a centralized location for involvement information for students.

The “Involvement” page would list applications, descriptions and deadlines for various SGA roles and positions.

“[The act] is not limited to any group, but I think it especially can help freshman who are coming into the University who want to be involved,” Scott said.

In addition, a constitutional amendment intending to publish SGA election results on the SGA website was proposed to the Senate.

Author of the amendment, Sen. Bennett McGehee, a junior majoring in finance and economics, said the amendment would ensure the publication of future election outcomes and constitutional referendum results.

The amendment was sent to the rules committee.

The Senate resolved to increase student awareness of study abroad programs through a tabling event.

The Senate also sent an act delegating funds to cover transportation costs for the Alabama Club Hockey Team to the finance committee.

The Alabama Club Hockey Team required $6,000 to cover transportation costs for the 2019 spring semester, and the Senate approved the transfer of funds after pulling money from the Senate, Executive and Contingency budgets.

 

Order of Events

  1. The Committee for Student Affairs passed A-01-19 (formally known as A-42-19), or the SGA Safety Act.
  2. C-01-19, a Constitutional Amendment to Publish and Maintain SGA Elections Results on the SGA Website, was sent to the rules committee.
  3. Act A-02-19, meant to cover transportation costs of the Alabama Club Hockey Team, was sent to the finance committee.
  4. The Senate passed the Lets Get Students Involved Act without opposition.
  5. R-05-19, a Resolution to Increase the Awareness of Study Abroad Programs, was passed.
