The Center for Service and Leadership will host its third annual Multicultural Leadership Summit, a seven-hour conference, on Feb. 2 for students to engage in dialogue.

Gretchen Moore, assistant director at the Center for Service and Leadership, said during the conference there would be two keynote speakers: Charles Nash, senior vice chancellor for academic and student affairs at the University, and Andre Denham, associate professor of instructional technology in the department of educational leadership, policy and technology studies at the University.

Moore said one keynote speaker will be talking about finding your voice as a leader and the other keynote speaker will be talking about social justice and advocacy.

What: Multicultural Leadership Summit

Who: Center for Service and Leadership is hosting, and any student interested can attend

When: Saturday, Feb. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Ferguson Student Center

Why:

“Students will engage in dialogue around social justice, leadership, advocacy, social change and career advisement,” Moore said.

The conference’s theme will be #HERETOLEAD Exploring Leadership through Social Justice and will feature multiple concurrent sessions throughout the conference, such as leadership, workplace culture and mental health.

“It’s always good for students to sit down at the table and engage in dialogue around diversity, inclusiveness and equity,” Moore said. “This is a moment in time when they can do that.”

Moore said creating a space for students to have an open dialogue about topics that sometimes are hard to talk about is important and doesn’t always happen enough.

“If we want our students to be global citizens, we have to talk about the issues that impact us locally and globally in order to move forward,” Moore said. “So we hope that the summit gets our students to think about issues that are impacting them and impacting people that are around them. I think the summit is a great way for us to dive in dialogue.”
