Women’s golf finishes second at Schooner Fall Classic

The No. 25 Alabama women’s golf team finished runner-up on Sunday at the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Oklahoma, with a score of 7-over par 847 (284-282-281). No. 2 Texas won the tournament, besting Alabama by nine strokes with a 2-under par 838 (283-275-280).

The Schooner Fall Classic is an annual tournament that features some of the nation’s top women’s golf teams. This year, the 15-team field included No. 25 Alabama, No. 2 Texas, No. 13 Florida State and No. 19 Illinois.

The second-place finish was the team’s first top-3 finish since it won the Schooner Fall Classic last year with an NCAA-record score of 45-under par.

Alabama finished the opening day of the tournament in third place on Friday. After the first 18 holes, junior Polly Mack finished with a 1-under par 69, which was tied for fourth overall. Mack also led the team with 13 pars and three birdies in the opening round.

Senior Kenzie Wright finished the first day of action tied for 10th after recording her fourth round of par or better, and an even par of 70. Junior Angelica Moresco was tied for 19th, finishing two-over par at 72. Freshman Caroline Curtis finished 3-over par in her fourth collegiate round and was tied for 28th. Freshman Emilie Øverås was tied for 71st with an 8-over par 78.

After the second round on Saturday, Alabama remained solidly in third place after carding a season-best round of 2-over par 282. After two rounds, the Crimson Tide held an overall team score of 566 (284-282). Oklahoma led the board with 557, and No. 2 Texas behind by just one stroke at 558.

Curtis was the story of Round Two, jumping from 28th overall to a tie at ninth after posting a 4-under par 66. She had three consecutive birdies on the back nine, totaling five on the day.

Mack finished the second round with a 2-over par 72. Moresco posted a 1-over par 71 and Wright fell to 31st after a 4-over par 74 performance. Øverås finished her day with a career-best 3-over par 73.

On the final day of competition, Alabama closed out the tournament finishing runner-up with an overall 7-over par 847 (284-282-281) on Sunday. Both Mack and Moresco finished tie for 16th after Mack carded an even-par 70 and Moresco finished with a 2-under par 68.

Curtis finished the final day with a 4-over par 74, while Wright birdied the first hole and made two more birdies on the day, finishing at 1-over par 71. Øverås finished her first collegiate tournament by posting a 2-over par 72.
