Volleyball swept by No. 13 Florida

Alabama volleyball fell on the road in three sets to 13th-ranked Florida on Friday.

Alabama took an early lead in the first set after freshman middle blocker Alyiah Wells had back-to-back blocks making the score 5-3. Florida picked up the pace and jumped ahead of Alabama, leading by eight at the 20 point mark. Florida continued to rally and took the set by seven, 25-18.

Opening up the second set, Alabama scored first, but quickly trailed after Florida pushed for four. The Gators continued their lead throughout the set, closing it with another win, 25-16. Momentum picked up in the third set when Alabama closed within one point, 5-4. Florida fought back and extended its lead, taking the third and final set 25-16, resulting in a match win, 3-0.

Alabama’s offense finished with 37 kills and 36 assists. Junior outside hitter Doris Carter led the team with 14 kills. Graduate outside hitter Eva Borrowdale and senior middle blocker Hayley McSparin also contributed to the kills putting up eight and seven.

Along with that, McSparin put up an early block in the first set, moving her into Alabama’s career top 10 in blocks.

Freshman opposite hitter/setter Emily Janek led the team with 31 assists.

Alabama will conclude its weekend on Sunday, Oct. 27 against South Carolina at 12 p.m.
