The Ferguson Student Center Theatre was filled Thursday night as members of the UA community sat wall-to-wall in order to watch short films created by students for Campus Moviefest.

Campus Moviefest, the world’s largest student film festival, is a free moviemaking event. It provides students them with the equipment they need to make their film, along with one week to make it. Students must create their film within that week, have it be no longer than five minutes, not violate copyright rules, and have all the correct release forms filled out in order to participate.

This was CMF’s ninth year at the University, and 137 teams participated. Of the movies created by 137 teams, 16 were shown at the finale Thursday at 7 p.m.

From comedy to tragedy, falling into love and out of it, having run-ins with aliens and alchemy, poking fun at reality TV and Broadway shows and obsessing over pizza and hair, the movies presented at Bama’s CMF certainly ran the gamut.

Following the showings the Black Warrior Film Festival Award was presented, along with awards for best on-set photo, best directing, best cinematography, best story, best production design and best actor and actress.

The top four scoring movies were presented Jury Awards. Recipients of Jury Awards were given T-shirts, clapboard trophies, free one-year subscriptions to Adobe Creative Cloud and the opportunity to have their films screened at CMF’s Terminus festival.

Jury Awards were presented to “The Last Slice,” “Beverly Hills OB,” “Spot” and “Hello.”

University Programs, which partnered with CMF for this event, is giving viewers the opportunity to be judges as well.

Those in attendance are encouraged to tweet the name of their favorite movie with the hashtag #CMFatBAMA and #UPick.

The winner of the UPick Award will be announced Jan. 28 and the winning team will receive a GoPro.

Jared Morgan, sophomore chemical engineer and UP event programmer feels the night was a success.

“We had a large turnout for both videos submitted and people who came to watch,” Morgan said.

Alaina Boukedes, senior theatre and journalism major, who received the Silver Tripod Best Actress Award for her performance in “Samantha Throws a Party,” loved how professional her CMF experience was.

“It is so refreshing to be at a college level and still have such a professional experience,” Boukedes said.
