PRACTICE REPORT: Alabama ends first week of spring football

While people across Tuscaloosa basked in the perfect, sunny, 70-degree weather on Saturday afternoon, Alabama football went to work instead, holding its third practice of the spring. Here are our observations:

  • The outside linebackers worked with defensive coordinator/OLB coach Tosh Lupoi at maneuvering around pads on the ground. Christian Miller went first, followed by Jamey Mosley and Terrell Lewis. They then moved across to an adjacent practice field and worked with blocking sleds.
  • The defensive backs ran about five yards before suddenly turning around to locate and catch a pass a coach had thrown at them.
  • Raekwon Davis and Isaiah Buggs led off the rotation of defensive linemen working with blocking sleds; Johnny Dwight and Quinnen Williams were the next pair to participate. A few minutes prior, defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski had them quickly changing direction to knock over a series of six tackling dummies spaced evenly apart from one another.
  • Offensive linemen ran forward in pairs toward blocking dummies that were acting as opposing defensive linemen, while coaches shouted “get your shoulder underneath his armpit!” The drill seemed to be mostly intended for interior offensive linemen, as five of the first six to participate were guards or centers. However, Jedrick Wills, usually a tackle, joined Josh Casher in the second pair, behind Ross Pierschbacher and Lester Cotton.
