Offensive Coordinator Mike Locksley named Maryland head coach

Offensive coordinator Mike Locksley was named Maryland’s head coach on Tuesday.

Locksley was named the offensive coordinator after Brian Dabol took was hired by the Buffalo Bills at the same position. Under Locksley’s play call, the Crimson Tide averages 47.9 points  and 527.6 yards a game. It has also set school records in both categories, scoring 623 points and gaining 6,859 yards.

“I am thrilled to be returning home and to have the opportunity to lead the Maryland Football program,” Locksley said in a press release. “This has always been a special place for me and my family, and I am honored to take on this role at the state’s flagship institution. Our goal is to create an atmosphere and environment focused on the total development of our student-athletes. Our focus will always be to help them become more successful in all areas of their life through their association with our program.

Earlier on Tuesday, Locksley won the Broyles Award, which is given to the top assistant coach in the country.

Before taking over as offensive coordinator this season, he coached the wide receivers. He was the Terps offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2012-15.

His last head coaching job was at New Mexico State, where he went just 2-26 in a little more than two seasons.
