Poor free throw shooting down the stretch stopped Alabama from finishing a comeback upset over No. 3 Tennessee on Saturday. The Crimson Tide fell 71-68 to the Volunteers despite a 30-point game from John Petty Jr., which tied his career high. Alabama finished 8-of-18 from the free throw line, only making 4-of-13 in the second half.

Although Alabama faced a 13-point halftime deficit, the Crimson Tide came storming back in the second half behind Petty’s hot shooting. Petty shot 11-of-18 from the floor and 6-of-9 from deep. Donta Hall chipped in 16 points and 12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season, which is the most in the SEC.

The Crimson Tide had an opportunity to win the game late. Trailing 69-68 with possession of the ball and 11 seconds on the clock, Petty was whistled for a traveling violation. After Tennessee hit two free throws, a last-second heave by Kira Lewis Jr. missed and the Volunteers secured the victory.
