Alabama runners took the top two positions at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Friday.

Alabama graduate Vincent Kiprop finished first individually in the men’s five-mile with a time of 23:09.88, with fellow Alabama graduate Gilbert Kigen (23:13.70) finishing second individually, less than four seconds after Kiprop. In their last appearance at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in 2017, Kigen finished first while Kiprop finished second. Both of their times marked new all-time bests in Alabama history along with career highs for both Kiprop and Kigen. Overall, the Crimson Tide men placed 16th.

Sophomore Mercy Chelangat (16:56.85) led the way for the women’s team in the finishing 35th individually for the 5k. Senior Rebecca Buteau (17:08.71) finished 54th and freshman Allison Wilson (17:17.52) placed 69th, giving the Crimson Tide women three top-70 finishes. Of their eight runners, six finished with personal-best times. The Crimson Tide women finished 14th overall.

While the women’s team will head to the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana, the men’s team will prepare for the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, New Jersey. Both events will be held on Saturday, October 19.
