Staff Demographics

The Crimson White Editorial Board voiced its commitment last summer to rejecting anti-Blackness, recruiting and retaining a diverse staff and keeping anti-racism at the forefront of our journalistic mission.

They said it’s long past time that we look inward and make sustainable changes to the way we do news. But how can we hold ourselves to that standard when we don’t know the demographics of our staff?

We know that in The Crimson White’s 127-year history, two Black students have served as editor-in-chief. Aside from that staggering statistic, there is no demographic data for staff from years past.

Beginning this summer, The Crimson White will publish a demographic report at the end of each semester. The report will be housed under the new “Staff Demographics” tab on our website.

We conducted a survey for all editors and contributing staff. Participation was voluntary and anonymous. Thirteen of our 16 editorial staff members participated, and about 75% of summer contributors responded to the survey.
